David Hunsaker: President
Hometown: Ogden, Utah
First Year Graduate Student, Public Administration
As president of Stand for the Family, David hopes to build upon the foundation that has been established in the past couple years. He will help take the club even further in fulfilling its purpose and goals. He hopes to expand student involvement, create more interest in current challenges facing the family and continue to give students the opportunity to participate in moving the organization forward.
David was raised in Utah and loved growing up in a family of eleven children. He served a mission in Malaysia and Singapore and speaks Mandarin, Chinese. On May 15, 2009, he married Melissa Nield and considers being married as the happiest time of his life. They will welcome their first baby, Emily May, at the end of June 2010. He enjoys speaking Chinese, spending time with family and staying up to date on the latest political issues.
Heston Van Evera: Vice President
Hometown: Shepherdstown, W. Va.
Senior: History Major, Logic Minor
As vice president, Heston wants to help streamline the organization so it can prove to be more effective at educating students about the importance of the family and how they can be an effective advocate of the family in public and private life.
Heston is the eldest of three sons and attended local schools in West Virginia until high school, where he attended a Catholic Preparatory School in Maryland. He was an avid boy scout growing up and continues to be an outdoors enthusiast. Heston served a mission in Houston, Texas. He plans to attend law school after he finishes his undergrad to study constitutional law and hopes to make a positive impact on national politics from the courtroom. He joined SFTF because he has a strong belief in the family as the basic unit of society and feels that political reform will prove fruitless unless the family has been strengthened first.
Rachel Augustus: Secretary
Hometown: Caldwell, Idaho
Senior: Human Development Major, Nutrition Minor
As secretary, Rachel wants to be the organizing link for the club. She will work to facilitate good communication between the presidency, committee heads and members by having good records and notes.
Rachel grew up on a farm where they raised beef cows and grew alfalfa to feed them. Growing up, she learned early that there is great value in hard work, learning responsibility and learning how to play. She intends to go to graduate school to study marriage and family therapy. She heard about Stand for the Family through the School of Family Life at the beginning of winter 2010. She volunteered at the Stand for the Family symposium and decided to get more involved. She loves the color yellow, pigs and country music.
Sarah Conway: Treasurer
Hometown: Phoenix, Ariz.
Senior: Human Development Major, Nonprofit Management Minor
As the treasurer for the upcoming year, Sarah hopes to help Stand for the Family gain and maintain the funding needed to be an effective organization.
Sarah became interested in SFTF because she believes the family is the main foundation of society. She also believes that the best way to make changes in the world is to start with the families closest to us, including our own families. After graduation she wants to work with disaster relief and to educate and care for orphans.
Mindy Davis: Advertising Chairman
Hometown: Layton, Utah
Senior: English Major, Family Life Minor
As the chairman of advertising, Mindy hopes to encourage other students to get involved in supporting and protecting the family. She also wants others to become more aware of current issues that concern the family.
Growing up, Mindy learned the importance of having strong family relationships. Her younger sister was born with a cleft lip and cleft palate and was required to undergo multiple surgeries. As Mindy and her family took care of her sister, they learned how to work together and support each other. In the future, Mindy hopes to work with non-profit organizations that support the family by providing financial aid in medical situations, or that work to inform others of the necessity to protect marriage and family. She is excited to be part of SFTF because she feels it is a great way to encourage others to recognize the importance of the family.
Greer Bates: Discussion Group Committee Head
Hometown: Orem, Utah
Sophomore: History Major
Greer’s ultimate goals as the discussion group leader are to accumulate knowledge and awareness of current issues and to help fellow students apply that knowledge through actively discussing these issues with other students.
As a young girl, Greer remembers hearing about abortion for the first time and feeling that it was wrong. As a 10-year-old, she had a strong desire to do something about it. She decided to make a flyer and announced to her class that she was starting an anti-abortion club. Unfortunately, her teacher pulled her aside and said she was not allowed to start the club. However, her desire to investigate and learn more about issues affecting the family has only increased since then. She loves history, writing, art, music, literature and is planning to serve a full-time mission in about a year and a half.
Daniel Miller: Web site Management Committee
Hometown: Braselton, Ga.
Senior: Computer Science
As part of the Web site management committee, Daniel hopes to keep the Web site looking clean and neat, and he also hopes to make new friends. He said Stand for the Family caught his eye while looking at clubs on the BYUSA Web site and decided it was a club he could whole-heartedly believe in.
Daniel grew up being home schooled with his four sisters and brother. He received a full scholarship to BYU at the age of 17 and will graduate April 2010 with an overall GPA of 3.99.
He attributes his success to his supportive family and Heavenly Father. He is an Eagle Scout and black belt in United Karate, and he served a mission in Hermosillo, Mexico.
Josh Bishop: E-mail Manager
Hometown: Orem, Utah
Junior: Psychology Major, Political Science Minor
As the e-mail manager for SFTF, Josh hopes to increase student participation in the club by getting the word out through e-mails.
Josh served a mission in Hungary, Budapest and loves photography and tennis. During Proposition 8 and while he was taking a strengthening marriage and family class, a desire was sparked to actively help protect the traditional family. He plans to use his future law degree to work in an area related to protecting the family and has enjoyed learning more about it through editing for the “Stance: For the Family Journal,” and volunteering at the Stand for the Family Symposium.
